Easy project: Shapes

35cm x 45cm

Layers

  • Front, 36 x 46cm – sturdy fabric, eg cotton brocade, furnishing fabric, gabardine
  • Interlining, 36 x 46cm – brushed cotton flannelette, cotton
  • Back, 36 x 46cm – soft, thick fabric, eg polar fleece, felted wool, velvet, furnishing fabric

Applique shapes

  • I used wool fabric, felted by machine washing in hot water.
  • Use any fabric that won’t fray, otherwise applique with satin stitch.
  • I used the shapes as they were, as they are much more interesting than straight rectangles and square. Trim your pieces in any way that feels right.
  • These pieces are approximately 6 x 26cm (x2), 8 x 15cm

Embellishment

  • 40cm plaited yarn, ric rac or cord. Use two lines of stitching to ensure it is well secured.

Assembly

  • Place the three layers on top of each other, pin around the edge.
  • Place central shape in place, pin through all 3 layers.
  • Stitch the central shape in place, extending the stitching to the edges. Stitch another line 3-4cm within the shape.
  • Pin the remaining two shapes in place, stitch.
  • Stay-stitch the edge, trim

Binding

  • Choose complementary colour, using a normal weight cotton or polyester.
  • Cut/assemble a strip approximately 170 x 4cm.
  • Sew binding using your preferred method.
