Foot Quilt – Wildlife

DESCRIPTION

Any of the other quilts on this site can be explored with the toes, but this one has upscaled textures and shapes to allow for feet having lesser sensitivity than hands.  It is inspired by echidnas, cougars and zebras but it is always interesting to hear what children imagine.

It has non-slip strips on the back so it won’t shift whilst being played with.

PLEASE REFER TO THE TECHNICAL INFORMATION BEFORE COMMENCING

Size

Approximately 35cm x 45cm (all layers cut 37 x 47cm)

Materials
  • Pieced stripes on top.
  • Cotton fabric or fleece on back
  • Thin wadding if needed
  • Narrow shoelaces – at least 6 per quilt. This quilt also has four ends of 2cm wide purple shoelaces
  • Two strips non-slip fabric, 6 x 35cm

ORDER OF ASSEMBLY

  • Piece top
  • Assemble all three layers
  • The shoelaces are all cut 4-5cm from the end for the quills.
  • Pin lines of shoelaces in place for the zebra stripes, double stitch.
  • For the cheetah’s spots cut about 6 lengths of shoelace 16-23cm long. Place as circles in a random arrangement, with the ends butting up or overlapping.  Stitch with double line of stitching, and firmly stitch across the open ends (this looks a bit rough but that adds to the texture).
  • The quills are placed so that they face all directions, and stitched firmly across the open end.
  • Trim and bind the quilt
  • To stitch the non-slip on the back you will need paper to enable the quilt to move on the machine:
  • –           place the non-slip at each end
  • –           place on grease-proof paper and pin in place
  • –           stitch on the inside of the binding, as in photo below
  • –           tear off paper
