DESCRIPTION
A contrast of smooth and bumpy textures which will be soothing to some children.
Knotted cord is partially hidden in the fake fur, so the child’s fingers are simultaneously in contact with the soft surface and cord.
PLEASE REFER TO THE TECHNICAL INFORMATION BEFORE COMMENCING
Size
Approximately 35cm x 45cm (all layers cut 37 x 47cm)
Materials
- Fake fur top
- Thin wadding if needed
- Plain colour back – use contrast colour thread in bobbin to highlight quilting
- 2 – 2.5m fine cord which is soft enough to be able to sew through a knot. Examples are Russia braid, “satin rat tail” and 3ply rayon cord.
ORDER OF ASSEMBLY
- The corner rectangle in the red version is an infill – it solves the problem of a missing corner, and adds interest.
- The knots are tied at random intervals of 5-10 cm and aren’t pulled very tight, as it makes it easier to sew.
- Pin the cord in place, having a meandering path (see back of quilt). Stitch with either zig zag or two rows of straight stitching.
- The cord in the green quilt changes colour because I ran out of the red cord. It adds interest, but could be deeply upsetting to some children.
- I use a seam ripper to hold the fur fabric aside where possible whilst sewing, so the fur partially covers the cord when released. This will be variable – once again, it adds interest.
- Trim and bind the quilt.
